My Story

20 + years ago I was lost, broken, burnt out (yada, yada, yada, you’ve heard it all before, right?) - anyhooos, I was in a bad place. Turning my back on a successful career in corporate account management, I disappeared to Asia and had a very late-breaking gap-yah (well, 6 actually).

Along the way I dumped a lot of baggage: past identity, a girlfriend (poor soul), an attempt at being a do-gooder (I worked for Amnesty International who I still deeply respect to this day) and - eventually - came to a full stop. In the midst of being held up at gun point in the third world, I suddenly realised that it was time to stop running, exploring and looking for something outside of myself. Having experienced some deep peace in India, I decided to go back and explore in depth the practices that had bought me the most inner stillness and contentment amidst all of my amazing adventures.

Laying down at the end of a Hatha Yoga class (I was terrible at Yoga, couldn’t touch my toes, couldn’t get past being the worst in the room) , the instructor led us in to the practice I now travel the world teaching. I hated it. I felt sooooo uncomfortable and restless. This intense sensation began to build in my forehead and I wanted to run out of the room flailing my arms in the air and screaming, but, being the polite English boy I am, I stayed. The sensation kept getting more and more intense and then - very suddenly - I was gone. I became the bird song, the lake, the sky. Completely out of my body. No sense of time or location. It seemed to last an eternity.

It’s taken me a very long time to understand what happened back there, and whilst this was a peak experience, it stayed with me enough to study, explore and put in to practice all that I’d learned. After many years of experimenting, several iterations of this work and writing The Book Of Rest, this website was borne.

Along the way I’ve had some other deep experiences of stillness, met some amazing guides and teachers, taken 10 years in Psychotherapy to get to know my early years of unconscious conditioning, become the father of two gorgeous children and been to the very depths of despair and heartbreak.

All of this is to say: through all of the ins and outs, ups and downs, something has remained constant. My relationship with deep stillness. I is the one and only place I have come to rely on as a perennial guid back home to my own inner knowing, calm and ease.

If only you stopped looking, you’d see there’s something fundamentally right with you

Rest into the part of you that is always OK, whatever’s going on in your life and the world around you.
